Paint correction in auto detailing is a multi-step process that removes surface imperfections like swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots, and blemishes from a vehicle's clear coat using machine polishing with abrasives, compounds, and polishes to restore gloss, clarity, and depth.
Key Stages of Paint Correction
Paint correction varies by defect severity, typically involving 1-3 stages with specific tools and products:
Stage 1 (Single Stage or Enhancement): Uses a finishing polish and pad for light marring on paint in good condition; enhances gloss without heavy cutting.
Stage 2 (Two-Stage): Starts with a cutting compound and aggressive pad to remove moderate swirls and scratches, followed by finishing polish to refine and eliminate haze.
Stage 3 (Three-Stage): Employs heavy cutting compound, medium polish, and finishing polish (plus possible wet sanding) for severe defects; minimizes deep scratches if full removal risks clear coat damage.
Typical Process Steps
Wash and Decontaminate: Thorough rinse, soap foam wash, wheel cleaning, clay bar and iron decontamination for embedded grime.
Inspect and Mask: Check paint thickness with gauges, tape sensitive areas.
Correct/Polish: Apply compounds/polishes in cross-hatch pattern on low-to-medium polisher speeds until residue clears; wipe and re-inspect.
Protect: Apply wax, sealant, or ceramic coating (Optional).
